NEWSTEAD is an inner suburb of the city of Launceston, located approximately 2 kilometres south east of the central business district. It has many exclusive and prestigious character homes located on beautiful, leafy, quiet streets and cul-de-sacs, as well as smaller ex housing commission homes ripe for renovating or renting.
A supermarket, bank, doctors surgery, pharmacist, cafe, newsagency, hair dresser, clothing outlets, bakery and other specialist stores all reside in the main NEWSTEAD shopping precinct.
There are various schools in the NEWSTEAD area. NEWSTEAD College provides senior-secondary education for Year 11, 12 and 13 students. Other schools include Community Christian Academy, Launceston Preparatory School and Scotch Oakburn College Early Learning Centre, Junior School and Boarding House.
Sporting facilities in NEWSTEAD include the NEWSTEAD Tennis and Squash Centre and the Hoblers Bridge Netball Centre. The Launceston Aquatic swimming centre is also nearby. The North Esk Trial is a 2.5km easy walking/bike trial that follows the path of the North Esk River and provides a link from NEWSTEAD to the city. There is car parking at both ends of the trial and an off leash dog area.
According to the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania, the median sales price of homes in the NEWSTEAD area for the 2010 March quarter was $282,750, down 4.2 per cent from the previous year.
