The most recognizable building in SOUTH LAUNCESTON is the Coats Patons textile factory. In it's heyday, it was the largest textile factory of it's type in the southern hemisphere and the major employer in the city however due to increasing costs and a inability to compete in an ever-changing market, Coats Patons was forced to close it's doors in 1997. In recent years, the Coats Patons building has been purchased and renovated by a local Christian church. The complex is now also home to one of Launceston's newest and largest gyms, Pycsam health and fitness club.
Another stand out building positioned on the edge of SOUTH LAUNCESTON and opposite the Launceston General Hospital is "The Charles Launceston", a new Apartment Complex, Business Centre and luxury Hotel. This complex used to be the old hospital and has been completely renovated.
